P O S T + – Pale Rider
Cassette & high quality digital download
14 cuts of hand made hardware dub straight out of Nashville, Tennessee.
Ranging from upfront to the subtle and dreamesque, POST+ exists alongside POST DUB, Pale Rider’s latest wax LP released on his Cassava Outernational imprint. Pale Rider is a solo project featuring Craig Allen of the Nashville/New York dub duo Phase Selector Sound.
Introduced to reggae through The Clash and The Subhumans while in grade school, Craig began both listening to and heavily experimenting with dub while in high school, initially using two cassette decks and a microphone mixer from Radio Shack to overdub.
Upgrading to a four track cassette recorder, Craig formed Phase Selector Sound with drummer Joshua Elrod and their debut CD ‘Disassemble Dub’ was released by ROIR Records (New York) in 1999. Phase Selector Sound material subsequently appeared on BSI Records (Portland), Lush Records (Sweden) and Select Cuts (Germany).
The Pale Rider project builds on Craig’s work in Phase Selector Sound while incorporating the influence of his subsequent years as a reggae/dub/dancehall selector. While Craig’s work with Phase Selector Sound was very reverent of classic dub a la King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry (and very much influenced musically by Roots Radics), he has now begun to realize a more idiosyncratic vision of dub that is very personal and highly creative, much as Keith Hudson and Glen Brown each carved out their own unique take on the genre that sounded like no one else.
And now, a few words from the Rider himself:
“I don’t deal with computer mixing anymore. I find it makes a lot of neo-dub sound safe and boring. I stay away from preset sounds and I dislike staring at a computer screen, endlessly tweaking. I have to get my hands on the mix – I’ll never be King Tubby or Prince Jammy but they are the masters – like jazz musicians whose instruments happen to be mixing boards.”
